Pillar 03

LOCAL

"Customers find a mix of positive and negative reviews more trustworthy. You can always respond to a review to show customers that you care."Google

If your business shows up when users have local intent — whether or not they type a location — ranking well in Google Maps is vitally important.

Local is zero sum. If competitors hold the top map listings, you can't. Showing up takes deliberate action.

Step 01

The Myths

"You need to have five stars."

A perfect 5.0 breeds skepticism. Research points to 4.2–4.5 as the most trusted range, and a few honest 3- and 4-star reviews handled well can help you.

"I don't have a physical storefront, so local doesn't matter."

Local SEO is essential with a storefront and still very important without one. Ranking for "marketing firms in Atlanta" wins clients who never visit an office.

Step 02

The Problems

Google extracts "near me" from searches

Search "sushi near me" and Google runs a local search for "sushi." Putting "near me" on your site adds no value.

Ranking first isn't always useful

You already rank #1 for something — probably something nobody searches. Spammers promise rankings without promising the terms.

Citations are tricky, weird, and essential

Your listings across other directories lend credibility with Google, and almost nobody tends to them.

Step 03

The Framework

01

Match local content on your site

Keep the areas you serve consistent between your website and your Google Business Profile.

02

Keep reviews coming and reply to all of them

Aim well above 4.0 and reply promptly to every review. Empathetic replies to negative reviews move the needle most.

03

Customers buy from brands they already know

80-90% of customers have a short list before research begins, and 90% buy from it. Be present in the podcasts, feeds, videos, and newsletters they already consume.

Step 04

The Proof

Slow and steady wins

A studio chain hit profile trouble and spun up two more accounts, making a bigger mess. Merging them slowly preserved every review and restored their rankings.

Use your local advantage

A trusted local mortgage broker bought an AI bot that cold-called his own clients. In a relationship business, that shortcut put distance between him and the people he served.

Weak citations are a big opportunity

Yelp, Apple Maps, Foursquare and dozens more. Keep your NAP — Name, Address, Phone — identical everywhere. Consistency is the whole game.

Step 05

The Actions

  • Reply to every review, especially the critical ones.
  • Keep local content on your website current and aligned with your profile.
  • Audit and tighten your citations — mostly hands-off, often a big lift.
